What to do in Playa?

There are many fun things to do in Playa del Carmen and The Blue Pearl has just the perfect location, all is within 5 to 10 minutes walking. The beach is Playa’s main attraction, with its powdery sand and beautiful waters in different shades of blue. All along the shore you'll find different beach clubs for all tastes, some more funky, other more quite and relaxed. At least a full day at the beach is a must in Playa del Carmen.

After 5 pm everybody heads for the Quinta Avenida, the 3 km long pedestrian street that has become the icon of this town. It stretches form South, starting on the Ferry Pier, all the way to the North where all the new development is taking place.

This is where you will find all the restaurants, shopping, bars, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, tax free shops… Take a sit on one of the restaurants or bars with tables on the street and enjoy the view of people for all countries walking along.

Playa’s night life is world famous. Whether you enjoy a drink by the ocean or dancing through the night, you'll find many places for fun and good time.

Another great way to enjoy Playa is on a bicycle. We’ll be happy to recommend a place for bike rentals and places to visit. There is a beautiful aviary in Playacar where the original natural setting is preserved: tropical trees, foliage, birds of all kinds, most of them free. It is an oasis of freshness well worth the trip.

Also in Playacar are some minor Mayan Ruins in their natural setting. Walk down the paths through the rocks and plants. It is very beautiful. Back to the Quinta you'll find a great open space shopping center called Paseo del Carmen. There are many shops that carry international brands at good prices, and some high quality mexican hand crafts.

There are also many great places to visit near Playa del Carmen

  • Xcaret park, just 15 minutes South of Playa, is a full day incredible water and discovery park for all ages. The fun culminates at night with an extraordinary show that depicts the history of Mexico through its dances and songs.
  • Akumal, 30 minutes South of Playa, a beautiful beach with low rise residential development, great place to spend a nice day by the sea. We recommend Yalku lagoon for a very special setting and great snorkeling. There are several good restaurants on the beach.
  • Xelhá, a large water park in an extraordinary natural setting. Be prepared for beauty and fun for a wonderful full and wet day under the sun.
  • Tulum, one of the most enchanting Mayan sites because of it unique setting: the sight of the majestic temples against the Caribbean ocean is unforgettable. Be sure to bring your camera! And it may be the only archeological site where you can take a dip in the sea to end your visit… without extra charge.
  • After a visit to the ruins head to Tulum beaches, still undeveloped and truly unique. The ocean is a bit wilder than in Playa but it is still a great place to swim and walk for miles on the softest sand. There are good places to eat in the small hotels on the beach.
  • On the route of Mayan Ruins 30 minutes from Tulum you'll find Coba, a very large site still to be fully discovered. Up to this date you can still climb on the Nohoch Mull, the highest pyramid. The view is worth it: miles of glorious pristine jungle. This is a very special place. Tune to the rhythm of nature and you may get the feeling of this sacred space. Mayan “chamanes” still perform special ceremonies on these grounds. It is a privilege to know this site.
  • Only 45 minutes North of Playa is Cancun, an international travel destination with luxurious hotels, wonderful shopping and great entertainment. Just a look at Cancun Ocean will change your idea of blue; this is where the “turquoise water” expression was born. There is no ocean color like Cancun’s.
  • 30 minutes north of Cancun is Playa Blanca. A still virgin huge stretch of sand that divides the ocean from a big lagoon. This is one of the top places to learn Kite surf. You'll see many new and expert guys crossing the waters at great speed. Good place for a picnic. Bring a beach umbrella.
  • There are many more options for a wonderful day trip, and great excursion providers. The Blue Pearl manager will be happy to give you more information and help you plan your days.
